Can I Choose My Section Order on the GMAT?

Yes, the GMAT lets you choose your own section order. You can take the three sections of the exam in whichever order you prefer, giving you six possible section orders (there’s a miniature combinations question for you!). No section order is perfect for everyone — it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

You have six possible section orders to choose from:

  1. Quant → Verbal → Data Insights
  2. Quant → Data Insights → Verbal
  3. Verbal → Quant → Data Insights
  4. Verbal → Data Insights → Quant
  5. Data Insights → Quant → Verbal
  6. Data Insights → Verbal → Quant

How should you choose your section order?

When thinking through your ideal section order on test day, consider two main factors:

  • If you’re likely to feel nervous at the beginning, start with a section that will give you the most confidence.
  • If you’re likely to feel exhausted at the end, finish with a section that feels less mentally taxing.

You also have the option to take one 10-minute break between any pair of sections. It can help you refocus for the next part of the exam, so choose the timing of your break thoughtfully.
